Bouchra Khalili works across different media in a characteristic narrative style. This monograph is a companion to her exhibition at the Bildmuseet in Umeå , Sweden. With the knowledge of the avant-garde that existed during the period after independence, as well as of the folkloric traditions of native Morocco, Khalili combines various performative narrative strategies in her works of art. These narrative forms are inspired by both “civil poetry,” as defined by the Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini, and the Moroccan tradition of al halqa. The accompanying essays investigate a number of concepts associated with these narrative methods. BOUCHRA KHALILI (*1975, Casablanca) is a Moroccan-French artist and professor who lives in Berlin. Her works deal with film, installation, photography, and printmaking, while also developing narrative strategies.
